Cutting expenses while cutting hair
By Daniel | April 24, 2008
To save money on hair cuts I’ve been cutting my own hair for the last 5 years. I’ve only had it professionally cut twice in that time. Once for a job interview and the second was for my wedding. I bought a hair cutting kit for about $30 from Conair and it came with everything, even a DVD on how to cut hair. I’ve tried talking my wife into letting me cut her hair, but she refuses to let me close. Cutting your hair gets easier over time and after a little practice you can try different styles. I usually just use the electric razor with different lengths and the scissors for trimming. Many people cut their children’s hair and to make a few dollars offer to cut a friend’s hair. I’ve decided to take a look at how much I’ve saved over the last 5 years and what a lifetime of savings would look like.

Initial cost of hair cutting kit: $30 Average number of haircuts a year: 8 (that’s a hair cut every 6.5 weeks) 8 haircuts a year at $15 per hair cut = $120/year in savings $120 x 5 years - $30 kit & 2 professional cuts($30) = $540 10 years = $1120 These numbers do not reflect inflation. A $15 haircut in 2003 will cost $60.47 in 2053 according to Tom’s inflation calculator. It also assumes I have hair to cut in 80 years. |

Thanks so much for featuring Expert Village in your post. We actually have a lot of tips on frugality, because DIY (a big focus for us) lends itself really well to saving money! I’m not sure if you saw this or not, but we also have a series on cutting women’s hair:

This might save even more money, because women’s haircuts can be very expensive.
Thanks again for featuring us!
