Food expenses around the world

By Daniel | April 26, 2008

FoodThe cost of food has flooded the news media recently. Prices are hitting record highs and countries are halting food exports to retain their own supply. Time Magazine has an article on What the World Eats and is based on the book, Hungry Planet.
This book presents a photographic study of families from around the world, revealing what people eat during the course of one week. Based on the 15 families featured in the Time article, I’ve created a chart that shows a break down of expense per person per week in each country. Our weekly grocery expenses for one week is about $90 for the two of us. Which breaks down to $45 per person and puts us between number 10 and 11. We don’t have a picture of us surrounded by our weekly groceries but you can see all of pictures of the featured families at Time’s website.
