Lowering your cable bill

Here are a few alternatives for watching TV shows to avoid paying for high cable bills. I have started to turn the TV off and be more productive rather than being glued to the TV for hours everyday. Since we no longer watch as much TV, we are only subscribing to the basic cable package. This basic package costs us $12 a month or $144 a year. This is a lot less expensive than the standard cable, which is around $60 a month or $720 a year. The premier package is even worse at $112 a month or $1,344 a year.

  • Standard to Basic = $576/year
  • Premier to Basic = $1200/year

To find some of the TV shows you lose by downgrading your service to a less expensive package, there are several options. The first place you can check is the TV station’s website. Many of them provide the entire episodes free of charge. The second option is websites that provide streaming TV shows and or movies on-demand. I’m currently using Hulu and Joost, but there are more of them showing up as the service gets more popular.
