Book Review: Smart Couples Finish Rich

By Daniel | May 4, 2008

Smart Couples Finish RichSmart Couples Finish Rich by David Bach focuses on money management for couples. I read this book shortly after getting married to find ways to manage our money together. My wife and I have all of our finances merged together and don’t have any separate accounts. Some people recommend having a separate checking account and such, but we felt merging our finances would work the best for us.

This is the first book I’ve read from David Bach and may read another at some time. He is best known for The Automatic Millionaire which is widely popular. He contributes to CNN’s American Morning and his Finish Rich seminars are one of the leading financial seminars in North America.

This book outlines 9 steps to creating a rich future for you and your partner. David includes many examples and situations of real people he has encountered to get his point across. This prevents the book from having dry content that can put you to sleep after a few chapters. The topics cover all aspects of saving money and increasing your income. I enjoyed the book and would not talk anyone out of reading it as a great foundation for couples to build upon.

The 9 steps outlined in the book are as follows:

  1. Learn the facts and myths about couples and money
  2. Determine the true purpose of money in your life
  3. Plan together…win together
  4. The couples’ latte’ factor
  5. Build your retirement basket
  6. Build your security basket
  7. Build your dream basket
  8. Learn to avoid the biggest financial mistakes couples make
  9. Increase your income by 10 percent in nine weeks

A few myths and facts David lists about money in the first chapter:
