Book Review: The Bogleheads’ Guide to Investing

By Daniel | May 13, 2008

Bogleheads\' Guide to InvestingJohn C. Bogle is the founder and retired chairman of the Vangaurd Group. Vangaurd provides low cost investing solutions for the individual investor which means minimizing costs and taxes. The Bogleheads’ Guide to Investing is written by Taylor Larimore, Mel Lindauer, and Michael LeBoeuf. They are the leaders of the Boglehead forums with over a century of investing experience and followers of the strategies that were laid out by John Bogle. Their top priorities in the book is teaching others how to get the best long-term return on your investments and spread the word about joining Boglehead investors online. There is no prior investing knowledge required to read this book. This is one of the first books I’ve read about investing and found it to be a solid and down to earth guide. I would not stop anyone from reading this book, I would even recommend it.

The topics covered in this book are as follows:

  • Getting on a sound financial footing before investing
  • What the various types of investments actually are
  • How to protect your investments against inflation
  • Determining how much you need to save
  • Building a simple but effective portfolio
  • Excellent ways to save for college
  • How to not let a windfall slip through your fingers
  • How to decide if you need a financial advisor and how to choose
  • How and when to rebalance your portfolio
  • When to tune out Wallstreet and the media
  • Controlling your emotions on investing
  • Steps to prevent financial catastrophes
  • How to retire comfortably without running out of money
  • How to pass assets on to your heirs
  • How to keep your investing lifestyle simple, giving more time to live your life to the fullest.
